Hollow State - Whiskey Packaging

Discover

Shaped by Time, Revealed Through Erosion

Hollow State explores whiskey as a result of time, pressure and transformation. Instead of relying on heritage-driven storytelling, the concept is rooted in geological processes—erosion, layering and the gradual removal of material over time. The design reflects this idea through a system that reveals different stages of aging. Each expression exposes more depth, with layers progressively stripped away to uncover what lies beneath. This approach creates a direct connection between the aging process of the whiskey and its visual identity. Material contrast, texture and progression were key in building a packaging system that feels tactile, restrained and grounded in the idea of time as a physical force, rather than just a narrative.

Concept

Designing Through Erosion

Hollow State is built around the idea of time as a physical force. Rather than approaching the design as a decorative surface, the concept focuses on erosion—how layers are gradually removed to reveal what lies beneath.

The label system reflects this process, using torn edges and material contrast to simulate depth and exposure. Each expression represents a different stage of aging, where the passage of time is not only communicated, but visually experienced.

A System, Not Just a Label

The project was developed as a scalable packaging system across multiple expressions. Instead of relying on color alone, the differentiation comes from depth, contrast and progression.

As the whiskey ages, the design becomes darker and more exposed, creating a direct relationship between time and visual identity. This allows the range to feel cohesive while giving each product a distinct presence on shelf.

Execution

Material and Detail

The design relies on material contrast to reinforce the concept. Lighter surfaces suggest untouched layers, while darker areas represent depth and exposure. Subtle textures and finishes are used to enhance the tactile quality of the packaging, making the concept feel physical rather than purely graphic.

Elements such as embossing, tonal variation and sealing details were considered to add depth and create a more refined, premium experience.

Designed for Real-World Presence

Beyond concept, the system was developed with production and shelf presence in mind. Typography, hierarchy and contrast were carefully balanced to ensure readability and impact at distance, while maintaining a restrained and premium aesthetic.

The result is a packaging system that feels considered, distinctive and aligned with the nature of the product.
